BBS Protocols, The communications between one computer and another is done through the use of protocols this is the same basic concept for downloading or uploading programs or applications over the modem through a dialup. Users on bulletin board system would select the program or appliation they would like sent to their machine and where presented with a list of protocols. The selection of the protocols available was based apon what protocols that came with their communications terminal program. Some of the selections made where Ascii, Xmodem, Kermit, Ymodem, Ymodem-G, Zmodem, BI-Modem and Super Zmodem. The difference in the protocols was various Xmodem was one of the orginal protocols created and the most widely used until the invention of Zmodem. One of the differences was the graphical statistics display, repeat a aborted download, selection of several different files for batch download, error checking and bi-directional transfer uploading and downloading at the same time. |
